Should Parents Sit in on their Child's Lesson?

  • Being involved in the process with your child is a unique and special bonding experience.

  • You get to observe your child in an outside learning environment.

  • You build a relationship with your child's teacher.

  • Effective home practice! You may not know this about music but sitting in the lesson will show you the correct way for your child to practice. It's often difficult for a student, especially younger students, to remember all their teacher's comments when they are actively involved in the lesson. Even when the teacher writes notes, when the student gets home, they often forgot nuances.

  • Results, results, results- Private music lessons can feel isolating which can impede motivation and progress. Being in the lesson allows you to see and hear what is ongoing so you are better able to support your child on their music journey.

  • Whether or not to sit in on your child's music lesson is an individual decision. We welcome and encourage our parents to sit in on their child's lessons when possible, whether for the entire lesson or just for the last 5-10 minutes, on occasion or every week.

  • Children are all different in the way they learn, concentrate and behave, so there is not standard from an educational point of view, however, there are advantages and benefits.
